Be Your Own Shaman by Deborah King

“Be Your Own Shaman” is a recounting of the author’s personal journey as she trained to become a healer or shaman. She uses her own tragic childhood stories to help the novice reader understand some of the technical language that is used. She talks freely of supernatural events that occurred while she was still a novice. And she uses her experiences while in training to help the reader get a real feel for the amount of work and dedication required to become a healer. Sprinkled amongst the pages of this amazing journey are lessons for the shaman in training.

Ravenous – a food lover’s journey from obsession to freedom by Dayna Macy

Ravenous is a journal of Dayna Macy’s journey to discover the reasons for her obsession with food, which she feels has caused her difficulties in managing her weight.

She summarizes her experience into 3 groups: Seduction, Communion and Transformation. She shares candid stories of her past and current experiences which have shaped her relationship with food, and her hands on research that she’s done to really allow her to delve deeply into the process from planting to cooking.

In the section about Seduction, she has a one on one encounter with five of her food group weaknesses – actually learning about and experiencing how they are made.

In her section on Communion she writes about her visits to the local farming co-op that feeds her family; some time spent foraging for wild vegetation; preparing her traditional family feast; baking bread; visiting a slaughter house; and revisiting her hometown, where she feels her particular love for food developed.

In the final section on Transformation she writes about her experiences fasting; melding of mind and body through yoga; learning about portion control; and learning about other’s relationships with food through volunteering at a soup kitchen.

I sat down last evening to have a look at this book. Once I began reading this amazing journey, I couldn’t stop until I finished. Danya Macy’s writing flows easily and is deliberately and deliciously colorful. I loved the stories, the honesty, and having the sense that I could relate to her struggle. I applaud her courage for her hands-on approach to becoming more intimate with food. I was not able to read the chapter she wrote on the slaughter of calves but I praise her for having the courage to endure the experience. And as an added treat, she shares some of the recipes from her experiences, at the end of each chapter, so that we can more closely share her experience.

21 spiritual lessons for surrendering your weight forever

For Oprah

“This book began and ended as a communication between friends. Oprah Winfrey inspired the book, directed its course, and guided its vision. On a soul level definitely, and in many ways a literary one, this book was a collaborative effort. Every page is a reflection of my affection for and gratitude to her; my hope is that it brings comfort to her as she has brought comfort to so many.

To any reader who might feel that this book is a gift, please know that it was a gift from her. ”   Marianne Williamson

Oprah’s Ultimate Favorite Things 2010

“What’s the connection between weight loss and spirituality? New York Times best-selling author Marianne Williamson answers that question in A Course in Weight Loss, featuring 21 spiritual lessons for surrendering your weight forever. The lessons in this book will help you shift your relationship with your body and focus not on how quickly you lose weight but on how holistically you lose weight. “We all know that it’s a spiritual issue to help you get your mind, body and spirit aligned,” Oprah says. Get ready to begin a new relationship with food…and with yourself.”  from Oprah.com

This is one of those amazing books, published by Hay House, that cannot be a quick, easy read. It is meant to be broken down into lessons, pondered and absorbed over a few weeks or months.  Choose a few family members or close friends to create a discussion/support group to enhance the benefits.

A side note about Hay House books. This is yet another beautifully printed book. The cover is what I believe to be Oprah’s favorite, apple green, color with gold toned embossing.

The Power of Intention, Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

This book makes a fabulous training manual or workbook for those interested in understanding the concept of the Source and Intention. A person could read through this in a few days, but I would suggest that they schedule some time, possibly 1 chapter per week or month, to actually study and ponder each chapter’s material and exercises. If one is studying this concept with the idea of putting these practices into place, also consider partnering with family and close friends, a sort of study group, to help ensure that those bonds stay strong through a mutual understanding of this journey.

This particular edition of this book, the Gift Edition, is breathtakingly beautiful due to the art work (illustrations by Jui Ishida), the brilliant colors and the soft glossy texture of the paper. This makes the case for “real books” vs “e-books”. There is no way that this sort of sensuous (b : producing or characterized by gratification of the senses – © 2010 Merriam-Webster, Incorporated) experience can be reproduced in digital form. I thank Dr. Dyer and Hay House for this amazing gift, which I consider one of my treasures.

Ch 1: Viewing Intention from a New Perspective

The Power of Intention, Learning to Co-create Your World Your Way by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

I think that for those who are new to Intention, the title of the chapter “Viewing Intention from a New Perspective” should really be Viewing Life from a New Perspective. Dr. Dyer teaches us that we must let go of what we’ve previously been taught about our self perceptions and learn a new way to view ourselves. Through that process we can then begin to understand the power of intention. Dr. Dyer includes instructions and exercises so that even a novice can easily understand these principles.

Part III: The Connection

This review is for “the gift edition” of this book. And, as you can see by the photo of the book cover and from the displays on the links that this is full of beautiful, joyful, art work, which makes it the perfect gift for someone interested in the Power of Intention.

As suggested in the Preface of the book, I read the final chapter, “A Portrait of a Person Connected to the Field of Intention”, first. This chapter helps the reader, whether a novice or seasoned co-creater, to focus on the goal of becoming more in tuned with the Source.

More to come . . .

Getting into the Vortex Guided Meditations CD and User Guide by Esther & Jerry Hicks

Getting into the Vortex – Guided Meditations CD and User Guide by Esther & Jerry Hicks

The purpose of this guided meditation set (part of the Vortex of Attraction Series) is to help the user learn how to adjust their Inner Being to be more in tuned with The Source. As your desire moves forward vibrationally into the Vortex of Creation, which is the home of The Source, the law of attraction then draws all cooperative components to it. The Hicks’ explain that the error that most people make when learning to practice Intention is to misstate their desire. It is best explained in their words:

“Anytime you try hard-from your position of need or pain or concern or worry or anger or hurt, from outside the Vortex-there is a very strong probability that your attempt, your effort, your struggle, your work . . . is completely counterproductive, because it just amplifies the outside-the-Vortex pattern that you already have going. If you can find a way of focusing differently so that you find yourself inside the Vortex, in alignment with who-you-really-are, and then, from inside the Vortex, you do 100 percent of your affirming, it is a shortcut that we think is really worth considering.” from the book, Getting into the Vortex by Esther & Jerry Hicks (Video)

There are four guided meditations: General Well-Being, Financial Abundance, Physical Well-Being, Relationships. The CD is for use after reading the user guide and contains the guided meditations offered by Esther Hicks. The lovely background music was created to help support the meditative state. It does so beautifully.

Experience Your Good Now! Learning to Use Affirmations By Louise L. Hay

Experience Your Good Now!
Learning to Use Affirmations. By Louise L. Hay

This is an interesting tool set (book and audio cd) for people who struggle with their internal dialogue. On the cd, that accompanies the book, Ms. Hay provides 1.25 hours of lecture on what affect our internal dialogue has on our lives, a way to distinguish positive and negative dialogue, and possible replacement dialogue, or affirmations, for different aspects of our lives.

Each chapter in the book provides a self assessment, explanations about possible causes of negative dialogue and the positive affirmations that will help transform negative dialogue into positive.

The chapters include Affirmations for:

Health
Fearful Emotions
Critical Thinking
Addictions
Forgiveness
Work
Money and Prosperity
Friends
Love and Intimacy
Aging

I would suggest that you first take the time to savor to the lecture, so you have a firm understanding of the purpose of this tool set. I would then do the self assessments. I was not surprised by some of the results. I’ve known that I have areas that need work. But there were a few categories that did surprise me.  And, now I know where I need the most work, and for me that is the most logical place to begin. I find that it is very helpful to learn where the negativity comes from so that I can mount a type of defense against future influences.

There were two chapters in the book that I do look forward to offer further comment on, since the purpose of Joy Quest is to offer support for those with chronic illness. One chapter is for the Affirmations for Health, the other Chapter is Affirmations for Addictions.

Well Seasoned Women by Brenda Kay Pfeifer

“As we collect seasonings, our taste changes. We add a little, we leave out a little.  Gathering spices and creating a personal recipe is a lifelong process.” Brenda Kay Pfeifer

The seeds for this amazing self-help workbook were sown nearly 30 years ago, but this wisdom is as relevant today, as ever.  For many years Brenda conducted workshops for Well Seasoned Women. The material presented and collected was cultivated, nourished and sculpted to become this incredible tool.

I would suggest becoming familiar with the book first, and then make a commitment of time to spend on the activities. You can take this journey when you need alone time, or invite a few friends to join you. Do this with close friends or family members, or people with whom you hope to become closer.  Think about taking this on a women’s retreat where you can spend a few days, away from it all, as you take this amazing journey of self discovery, with Brenda as your guide. www.wellseasonedwomen.com
